POSITION:                             Senior Laboratory Analyst

DEPARTMENT:                    WATER RECLAMATION

 

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to conduct microbiological testing and analyses of samples from lakes, streams, and the CCWA wastewater distribution system to ensure compliance with all state and federal permits and regulations, and to provide lead guidance, direction and training to less experienced laboratory staff. Incumbents in this classification perform more complex testing and analysis duties, possess a bachelor’s degree and have two years of experience in testing and analyzing wastewater samples.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex/problem situations; provides technical expertise; and assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of laboratory/instrumentation equipment.

Analyzes samples from lakes, streams, and CCWA water reclamation facilities, wetlands sites, stormwater samples, samples from DHR and industrial sites to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and permitting requirements: immediately supervisor of violations.  

Performs a variety of chemical, bacteriological, biosolids and biological tests: documents test results; and prepares and submits related reports.

Maintains documentation of work activities, including lab bench sheets, WIMS sample login, results and data validation, sample documentation and chain of custody forms: records data; and verifies accuracy and completeness of data.

Recommends and initiates lab procedures and techniques: performs routine quality control checks on reagents, media and data generated specific to permit compliance; and trains lab personnel on new or existing methods and quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures.

Cleans and sterilizes lab containers and utensils: calibrates and cleans equipment used in wastewater testing; maintains equipment used in the plant; keeps daily log on equipment and calibration checks; and maintains cleanliness and organization of the lab.

Serves as the QA/QC Officer: monitors compliance with QA/QC procedures and programs; prepares QA/QC reports, including control charts, matrix spikes, laboratory fortified blanks, standards and duplicates; conducts root cause analysis of any issues with QA/QC; reviews standard operating procedures and updates documentation as required; and monitors corrective actions to address deficiencies or nonconformities in the laboratory.

Conducts an annual Discharge Monitoring Report-Quality Assurance (DMR-QA) used to evaluate the analytical ability of the analyst that perform self-monitoring analyses required by the NPDES permit.

Conducts instrument detection limits, method detection limits and calibration curves on all instrumentation.

Follows safety procedures and protocols: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees; initiates actions to correct deficiencies and deviations; monitors chemical hygiene plan; and updates as needed.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains microscopes, autoclaves, balances, analyzers, meters, spectrophotometers, incubators, and other specialized laboratory instruments, tools and equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, other CCWA employees, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field required; supplemented by five years of experience in collecting and analyzing wastewater samples; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possess and maintain Georgia Wastewater Laboratory Analyst license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

 

PAYGRADE:                         20H (starts at $28.86/hour - $43.29/hour )
